What are you waiting for?

What are you waiting for?

Waiting for things to happen, what a complete waste of time.

I hear this all the time.

"I’ll be happy when I meet someone".

Why? Why wait for when? What if "when" never comes?

When you consider it logically, you see that all this is doing is putting conditions on your happiness; it’s waiting for something that may or may not happen in the future.

The strange irony is, you are actually more likely to achieve these things if you’re happy first. So why are we all so intent on waiting for the future? The future, after all, is a complete mystery. And is you’re anything like me, you’ll probably have changed your mind by then anyway. A woman’s prerogative, I’m told.

Really waiting is just wasted time.

What if tomorrow never comes?

When you’re focusing on the future, and waiting until the right time to take action, all you are actually doing is delaying the outcome.

Your future goals only materialise when you start to act on them. You’re not going to be bikini-ready by summer if you keep saying that the diet starts tomorrow. The rest of your life starts right here, right now. What you are doing at the moment is defining what your future looks like.

Things change in a moment; you don’t know what you life is going to look like in a few years’ time. Planning ahead makes sense, of course, being prepared is just common-sense, but being rigid in your thinking is just plain nonsense.

If you picture the future too specifically, if you’re too attached to certain outcomes, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment. Even worse, you may miss out on an even better opportunity because you couldn’t see beyond what you had envisaged.

It never will work out as you had envisaged it. Life doesn’t work like that.

You may want things to change in your life – have more friends, be more successful, fitter – but focusing on those external things, you may lose sight of the one thing that you can control. Yourself. If everything around you seems to need changing, if you’re unhappy with what’s going on around you, then maybe you need to look at the one thing we can change. How you are.

"Be the change you want to see in the world".

Wise words from Mahatma Gandhi.

If the world seems like it’s full of people with no respect, try being respectful. If you want to be a size 10, then start eating like a size 10. Today. If you want to be a millionaire, start thinking like a millionaire. Act "as if" you have what you want, starting now, and you’re more likely to get what you’re striving for.

Live in the moment, make your decisions about how you want life to be, moment by moment, and watch the magic unfold.
